In Ergänzung der Neuedition der Bekenntnisschriften der Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirche werden in diesem Quellenband erstmals alle bislang nur handschriftlich vorliegenden Vorstufen der Konkordienformel und der Vorrede von Konkordienformel und Konkordienbuch ediert: die Fünf Artikel und die Sechs Predigten Jacob Andreaes, die Schwäbische und die Schwäbisch-Sächsische Konkordie, die Maulbronner Formel und das Torgische Buch sowie die Vorstufen der Vorrede. Auf dieses Weise wird nicht nur die komplizierte Entstehungsgeschichte des Konkordienwerks deutlich, sondern auch das Ringen um Konsens und der Wille zu einer theologischen Einigung, die von Fürsten und Theologen gleichermaßen getragen wurde.
